A rough few days have passed for me recently. I realise now, that in spite of all my exercise, nutrition, and efforts to avoid the usual winter depression, I could not escape it completely. Sleep has been the best medicine.
The episode seems to be passing (as I write this blog) but for sure, it has not been as intense or debilitating as in previous years.
All the same, it is a salient lesson in something; not getting smug about overcoming the impact of the planet's seasons and the resultant impact on my mood, brain and body.
So, would I prefer that the earth was not tilted at 23 degrees? What would life look like without the tilt?
A recent entertaining episode of Curious Cases (Hannah Fry and Dara Ó Briain) explored the question from a scientific perspective. A climate modelling researcher offered an explanation which looked pretty bleak. There would only be a very narrow band around the globe where it would be possible for life to be sustained. The other areas would be covered in either glaciers or deserts. There would be no seasons as we know them. Weather in the UK would become like areas of coastal Iceland, very cold and always windy.
Given this alternative, I know which scenario I would prefer. What are your thoughts?
