A Moment to Savour

Getting control of ‘The Monster in My Mind’ is Critical to the wellbeing of each of us moving forward.  I have been tormented by the Past and terrified by the Future.  With regrets for a life not well-lived, and anxiety concerning a difficult path ahead, it’s easy to want to hide in bed… if only I could escape into sleep. But the Mind Monster is diligent and vigilant, keeping me awake, and it doesn’t usually hide under the bed!

One remedy lies in the gift of the Present – a moment to savour.  When my uncontrollable thoughts are going ‘nuts’ – I can, once more, steer their energy into a different focus (cf. ‘Rather’ – the blog from last Monday). Being present in the present is one skill that makes sense – literally. I may not feel happy but I do appreciate many aspects of daily life. When the tormenting Mind Monster wants to pull me into the Past or pile up fears for the Future, I can come back to the moment and find something to appreciate.  At this moment, this is my favourite brand of coffee – and the first one of the day – always seemingly the best.

I become more present by applying my senses to enjoying the coffee - consciously. It has an attractive creamy and soothing look – matched by its creamy and soothing taste and texture. It’s almost ‘maternal’ in the comfort it offers with its warmth and smoothness.

If the Mind Monster or one of its colleagues comes visiting your thoughts today – have a go at coming back to the present, using your senses to indulge in the moment – free from the tyranny of the ‘ought’ or the terror of the ‘must’. One thought at a time.
