A friend of mine was recently telling me about a teacher at his high school who had died a few weeks ago. On the Facebook page all the students wrote how they felt special, wonderful and fantastic. This teacher had been encouraging them and giving them confidence. My friend never felt he was favourite and felt the teacher never liked him. He was not surprised how his ex-classmates felt so positive about this teacher. He often felt there was something wrong with himself.
I could relate to my friend as this happened to me last year when a history teacher died and ex-students wrote glowingly of the teacher and one person wrote how this teacher changed her life. This teacher had favourites and I was never one. I tried so hard to please the teacher but every assignment was covered in red ink and full of negative comments. I too decided there must be something wrong with me.
Maybe if you have been a teacher’s favourite, or the favourite at work or the favourite in a sporting or interest group, can you explain how you felt? Have you ever wanted to be a favourite? Do you feel that when a teacher has mostly favourites it is unfair to those students who miss out?
