I am not a mind reader

I have said this to others and others have said it to me. What does it mean and how does it feel?

When I say it, I feel frustrated that the person has not communicated what they really wanted, given no hints, and even with my understanding I could not read what they wanted.

When someone says it to me, I assume someone will know what I want because I have given clues, told them how I was feeling. Some might say if I want something, it is up to me to ask for it. I feel misunderstood.

It has two parts: know what I want or need, and then tell it to the right person. For some of us, though, it is not an easy one as it is challenging. Sometimes we do not really know what we want.

Some people want to fix things and make you better, but all you want is a hug or someone to listen.

Why do we find it so hard to tell some people what we need? I find it difficult when people ask me what I want but then they tell me what I really need. I feel judged and so don’t tell people how I really feel.

In the past there were drawbacks for asking for what you wanted that would help you. You may be labelled selfish if you said what you needed. So people would not say what they needed as they  would fear rejection.

Do you ever say to others I am not a mind reader or do people ever say that to you?

How does it make you feel?
