I think, therefore I become…

You’ve heard it said that we become like the five people we spend most time around. What if we become like the five patterns of thought we spend most time thinking?

Earl Nightingale wrote in, “The Strangest Secret,” that, “We become what we think about most of the time.”

Here are five thinking patterns that I suggest for starters:


1. Truth – what is true about this? What has to be true for this to work? This is helpful when navigating a culture with players that bend the truth to suit their own agenda. It can even be helpful when you are criticised. After taking a deep breath, we can ask ourselves, “What has to be true about this for them to arrive at their conclusions?”

2) Nobility – how would I behave if I were, like Prince William and Princess Catherine, very much in the public eye, with every word, gesture, and outfit examined? What is the noble way to behave?

3) Beauty – what is lovely about this? What is beautiful? What is pleasing to the eye? What is delightful to the ear? What is gorgeous to the touch? What smells beautiful? What tastes good?

4) Excellent and Praiseworthy – it is good to catch others doing things well – like customer service. It is even better to catch ourselves doing something well! If we were to increase the praise we give ourselves for being kind or creating something beautiful and doing something well… the results would be a better life.

5) Peace – remembering Dr Wayne Dyer’s phrase, “I can choose peace rather than this.” How could you choose peace rather than anxiety or fretting or conflict?
