Monologue or conversation

I have been interested in people’s conversational style when at a social event.

Recently I attended a social event where I was placed at a table with people I didn’t know.

One person monopolised the conversation so much it became a monologue. Some other people managed to ask a question but the person kept hogging the conversation and I was so frustrated that I gave up listening.

Another style is the serial interrupter. They can’t wait till they talk and then take over the conversation.

The over corrector delights in telling others they are wrong even if they are not. They delight in correcting facts or pronunciations.

The mobile phone gazer has had enough of the talk and prefers to screen watch.

The over talker talks louder and over the person talking.

The joker tends to make light of the chat if they feel out of their depth. I have been guilty of this. I thought I was funny but was told later I was being a bit disrespectful.

I wonder which style you have encountered and which annoys you the most. Or can you recognise a little bit of some of these styles in you or your friends or family?

How do you cope with any of those styles when at a social event?
