“Nature” provides fertile subject matter for metaphors, ideal substance for similes, and the perfect platform for parables.
How would you describe yourself using a metaphor from Nature? Are you a plant emerging from the soil to greet the Spring? Are you a bird building her nest? Are you a tree bursting with fresh leaves after your Winter’s rest? Are you some kind of animal? Or are you an element of Nature like earth, wind, water, or fire?
Are you as bold as a lion? As wise as an owl? As playful as a kitten? As stoic as a donkey? (OK, I made that up!)
Let’s see if you know some of the most popular:

This is a wellbeing blog, so how do metaphors and similes and parables relate to mental health? We tell ourselves stories and we often use metaphorical language. We may say, “The odds are stacked against me,” or, “I wasn’t dealt a good hand.” We can say, “Life’s a struggle; I battle everyday with…” Or we can relax into, “Life is a breeze… a veritable walk in the park.” Whatever language we choose to explain our perception, you can bet that your brain will actively seek for any evidence that confirms your verdict! The more empowering the metaphor, the better the mood.
I invite you to share your own metaphors and similes in the comments. I also wonder how powerful it would be to choose a positive metaphor or simile for the day and even the week ahead. Would you like to be a bold as a lion? And as wise as an owl? And even as playful as a kitten? (Three is more than enough!)
I look forward to your stories and your insights.
