Penny and I are getting ready to enjoy Eurovision – and, of course, you’ll know the result when you read this. At the point of writing, I don’t, and the anticipation is half the fun. The Competition is really over-the-top this year, and I think it should be – it acts as a joyous antidote to pessimism. Most friends I talk to dismiss it as vulgar and rather light-weight, and, equally, miss the original purpose. Eurovision was a move to promote unity post-World War II.
Anaïs Nin said: “We don't see the world as it is, we see it as we are.” This is what I now call, Neurovision. We see the world, all of it, and everything in it, through the filters of our own journey and experience, our biases and beliefs.
“Does it look better with this… or this?” the Optician asked me at my last eye-test. By changing the lenses and their orientation, my focus and worldview was transformed. Today, I picked up my new glasses, and the world is transformed.
Oftentimes, transformation is one new filter away. My bifocals are great for seeing both detail and the BIG Picture. If I may jump to my camera as another visual metaphor, my shutter speed can freeze a rapidly moving splash of water from a fountain, or blur the movement of the Ocean by going for a long exposure. I can take a picture of a cup containing water and choose to label it half-empty… or half-full! We can all begin a day looking for what works, or looking out for the trouble that may be ahead. Again, “We don’t see the world as it is, we see it as we are.”
How about a change of Neurovision prescription lenses this week?
· From, “I hate chores – they are pointless,” to, “I’m creating a clean, tranquil space in which to flourish.”
· From, “I didn’t get the job,” to, “There will be a role with a better fit.”
· From, “I’m not good enough,” to, “I have unique strengths and room left to grow.”
· From, “Others are so much better than me,” to, “I’ll focus on my progress, not others’ edited highlights.”
· From, “Everything is going wrong,” to, “I will tackle each challenge, one small step at a time, and celebrate every small victory along the way.”
· From, “My plans are messed up, everything is ruined,” to, “Now, I have time to relax and even to try something new.”
· From, “I messed up,” to, “My ‘mess’ is my ‘message’ – this mistake shows where I can grow.”
· From, “I can’t do this – it’s way too hard – too much,” to, “I’ll give it a bash, maybe even my best, and I’ll learn along the way.”
May we all try a new Neurovision this week and see the world with fresh eyes.
If you’re up for it, it would be great if you’d share uplifting examples of where you’ve changed your view of the world, circumstances, or a person.
