For stronger mental health, sometimes we need to sign out of the news. It might bring guilt to do so.  And why?

If we were to go back even just one generation, we received our news very differently.  It was dripped in.  Maybe breakfast news, or maybe a newspaper, you might tune in to a 6 o’clock news or a 10pm update, but often only if there was something you particularly wanted an update on.

Wads of Sunday papers were for those who wanted a more in-depth dive.  We didn’t feel guilty. We took news as life then dictated and we carried on with our lives. So why would we feel any guilt for taking that back? We don’t need to absorb news minute by minute, hour by hour, or even day by day, especially so if it helps to bring us down.  We can’t contribute at all in so many cases.  We can only bear witness, and there are plenty witnesses. Joining the growing circle is not necessary and guilt serves no good purpose.

One way we can influence the world in our own radius is simply to be us. And to be us, we need to keep true to our own enjoyment, growth and values.

News is a water tap, and we get to decide whether we’re fed by drip or whether we fill up when ready.
