Rather

How easy it is to forget the fundamentals. Specifically, how easy it is to forget that what we focus on expands – at least in our perception. How much more sensible and helpful it is to focus on what we would prefer – on what we would rather have.

This one word – ‘rather’ – has become ‘rather’ important to me! Like so many Moodscopers, we face unpleasant circumstances and situations from time to time. If I may play the ‘easy’ card again – it is way too easy to focus on what we don’t want – i.e., the circumstances.

I haven’t found the ‘off’ switch for my thoughts yet, but I know my thoughts can been steered in certain directions.  Having a mind flooded with negative thoughts has brought me down to depths I’ve never known before, but these thoughts are in no way helpful.  Thus, I was reminded of a powerful question when driving across the beautiful causeway over the water meadows in Wareham, “What would you rather have?”

The question was enough to divert my thoughts.  If thinking it like an unstoppable river, even a river can be diverted.  Now I only require one key word to remind me I can influence the direction: ‘Rather.’

Whatever circumstances you are facing at the moment, and if there are any tormenting thoughts compromising your wellbeing and sense of inner peace, may the question, “What would you rather have?” steer your thinking in more resourceful, helpful, and encouraging ways today.

As you read this, I shall be in hospital to sort out my heart, thus I may not be able to respond today, but next time I write to you it will be with a change of heart and mind!
