Remembering board games past and present

After talking to some friends and families I have discovered that many people have memories about a particular board game they played as a child and how they affected the family.

My mother told us about a Scrabble time, that according to her, was played when she had been married six weeks. This was the first time she had played Scrabble with my dad. It was near the end of the game and my dad had a ‘Q’ so he used his go to put the letter back, ensuring my mum would pick it up. She lost ten points, my dad got the points, and he won. My mum was very competitive at word games and didn’t talk to my dad for two weeks. She felt upset that she was his wife yet he had decided to use that play, which my mum maintained to this day was cheating. She would not believe the written rules.

My dad said they had been married for two weeks and mum did not Dad talk to him for four weeks and never played scrabble again with him. Dad felt he was playing the rules and it was just a game.

What memories do you have of playing board games with family or friends?

Do you have a story about playing a board game, or special rules, or the way you played board games?

Do you have a favourite board game or game from the past or present?

Any story from your past about playing board or other games will be welcome.
