I bet you love a good story! I’ve been captivated by ‘Sense8’ on Netflix. It most certainly isn’t for everyone – I found the intimate scenes embarrassing – but the core message is one for all of us. Spoiler alert…
The heart of the plot is how a group of 8 people are connected to one another to such an extent that they can sense through one another’s senses. They can also benefit from the skills and languages that the others possess. This means if someone in your group knows French, you do too. If they know how to act, you do too.
The story is science fiction but the metaphor struck me as relevant to our own community. Consider how many of us know how to speak French! Then there will be a multitude of other languages. What about other skills? Leah’s very good at encouraging us to value our strengths.
This blog arose out of a single thought. I wondered what life would be like if I had 7 close friends with diverse backgrounds, culture, skills, and characters. What could we achieve together if we served the group of 8’s interests?
I may be thinking in fictitious terms but the idea is attractive. The practical outcome is that I thought about ways to extend the group of people I’m connected to. Then I could think about how I could serve the group.
Anyone who has ever owned a van, will not be surprised by how many new friends they attract! Imagine going shopping in France with a friend who can speak fluent French. And perhaps you had a friend who was able to do your homework for you!
I’m learning that we are much more than individuals – we are the sum of our connections. Thus I wish you a week in which you proactively seek out new connections, and strengthen the current ones you value.
Oh, by the way, what is your top strength you’d bring to your ‘group’?
