I have been watching a show on YouTube about scandalous women which shows women who I have heard of and many more which I haven’t known. This show made me think about what makes a scandal and what makes behaviour scandalous.
A scandal is an action or event that causes public outrage or shock due to its perceived immorality.
Scandalous is describing something that produces or is causing a scandal.
I have a few questions and observations:
Usually when you think of scandalous behaviour one often thinks of women.
Are scandals and scandalous behaviour a product of the time or culture?
Sometimes clothing has caused a scandal and the people wearing them are labelled as behaving in a scandalous way.
For a long time, women in many cultures were only allowed to wear long dresses or skirts. When women started wearing pants/trousers it was seen as scandalous by many people.
Moosdcopers can probably think of behaviours once shunned by society or considered scandalous that are now part of everyday customs.
In the mid 1970s I used to shake men’s hands when meeting them at social gatherings. Someone told my mum that it was not lady-like for a girl to shake men’s hands. Now many women shake men’s hands as a social introduction.
I am wondering if any Moodscoper caused a scandal or had people comment about so-called scandalous behaviour.
