As a teenager, some of my colleagues (I’m not going to call them ‘friends’) said, “You must listen to Jimi Hendrix!” Because they said, “You must…” and because I am such an idiot, I intentionally avoided Jimi Hendrix like the plague.
…until I eventually listened to Jimi Hendrix and I ‘got it’ – realising that I should have listened to Jimi Hendrix decades ago.
At school, some of my colleagues (getting the pattern yet?) said, “You must read ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy!” So, because they said, “You must…” and because I am such a stupid idiot, I avoided it like the plague for years.
…until I had to commute on the Piccadilly Line – which is the most claustrophobic underground network in London. The only known cure for the Piccadilly Line is, “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” If you have the misfortune to travel on the Piccadilly Line, take a towel and a copy of ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” and don’t panic. And if anyone says, "Would you like to hear one of my poems," say, "No!" and get off the train asap.
Recently, people had been bleating on and on to me about, “You must watch ‘Ted Lasso’!” And because I’m such a ********** Roy-Kent-level idiot, I refused. Trust me… watching ‘Ted Lasso’ is worth every penny of the Apple TV subscription. I have NEVER seen such a life-affirming, beautiful, tear-jerking, laugh-out-loud, heart-warming series with such a satisfying ending. And it’s about ******** football for *****’* sake!
I want to be Ted Lasso, but I think I’m more Roy Kent. Now, you’ll have to watch it otherwise those references will mean nothing. If you want to know what a modern man should be like, check out Ted. If you want to be inspired to be a powerful, glorious, woman, check out Rebecca.
OK, some of you are too like me, so you won’t watch it because I said you must. Know then that sometimes when we resist other people’s recommendations, we rob ourselves.
I was wrong about Hendrix, I was really wrong about The Hitchhiker’s Guide, and I was out-of-the-park totally batshit crazily wrong about watching ‘Ted Lasso’ – don’t be an idiot.
